Another burgeoning summer tourism season on the Costa del Sol has been reflected in latest passenger figures for the popular area’s international airport.
A total of 2.2 million passengers used Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport in August, 4.1 per cent more than for the same month in 2018 – and the highest August total in the airport’s 100-year history.
The growth was similar for both national and international traffic. Of the 2,198,414 total, 1,902,736 passengers had their journey’s origin or destination in a foreign city (up four per cent on 2018) while 295,678 were with national connections (5.1 per cent increase).
The foreign markets with the highest demand in absolute terms were the United Kingdom (696,538 passengers), Germany (163,177) and France (153,242). Holland (115,631) and Ireland (111,546) also recorded significant passenger traffic in August. The Irish total was 23.6 per cent higher than August last year.
As far as overall operations were concerned, Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport operated 15,641 flights in August (including 15,157 commercial), two per cent more than for the same monthly period in 2018.
The greatest traffic density was recorded on Saturday 10 August, with 555 landings and take-offs. The peak day for passengers, however, was Sunday 4 August, with a total of 77,743.
The August figures gave a further positive boost to the cumulative annual totals, with the number of passengers since January rising to 13,649,605, an increase of 5.6 per cent compared with the corresponding eight-month period in 2018.
Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport registered 99,703 flights between January and August (96,534 commercial), 4.3 per cent more than in 2018.
